New Law Requires Organic Waste Recycling Starting April 1st

This week, the City of Carlsbad, CalRecycle and Feeding America San Diego held a workshop to educate businesses about a new law on organic waste recycling. Assembly Bill 1826 requires organic waste recycling beginning April 1, 2016 and it could affect your business. The law requires that businesses arrange recycling for food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous food waste and soiled-food paper. Starting April 1st, generators of eight cubic yards or more of organic waste per week must start recycling. Ways to recycle organic waste include subscribing to an organic waste recycling service, recycling it onsite yourself, and selling or donating it.
Financial incentives in the form of grants and loans are available through the state to assist in meeting the requirements of AB 1826. More information on those grants and loans can be found here. Businesses can direct all questions on grants here and questions on loans can be sent here.
