He enjoys being part of the internship program because he has the chance “to assist interns throughout the hiring process, network with local colleges and prepare students for success.”

At work, employees are encouraged to participate in “sponsored” activities, including basketball, soccer, CrossFit, yoga, happy hours and other morale-boosting events. Although Ionis provides significant perks, that isn’t what initially attracted him to the company. “I wanted to work for a company that helped people who are ill, to improve their quality of life,” he said.

Victor said that Ionis invests in its employees, no matter what position they hold. It does that so every employee feels valued and supported. Victor also talked about the company culture and how he works hard to stay connected with his coworkers.

“We encourage people to bring their dogs to work and we take them on hikes. I also use these times to meet more people within the company and get to know them. This way, people get to see me and can put a face to my emails.”

Victor personally enjoys staying active in the community, from sporting activities to going to the gym, and joined the city’s Life in Action Ambassadors program to help promote the Carlsbad Life in Action brand and lifestyle.

“I was invited to participate in the program and chose to do it to help promote the company, get the word out about the opportunities in Carlsbad and to show that businesses in Carlsbad can compete with those in larger urban cities.”
