September 29, 2015
The largest ocean water desalination plant in the western hemisphere nears completion (currently 98% complete) this year and represents a significant investment in the local economy. The $1 billion project generated 3,000 jobs during construction and will produce another 400 more once the plant is operational.
Businesses require a reliable water supply and the investment will continue to accommodate business growth into the future. At present, 64% of the region’s water comes from the Colorado River, while 19% comes from the northern California through the Bay-Delta. The remaining 17% comes from local sources. Investing in more diverse water supply and increasing the amount of local water generated means business in Carlsbad will continue to thrive with a reliable supply.
