Small Businesses, Big Impact: Celebrating Small Business Saturday in Carlsbad

October 28, 2026

From independent bookstores to neighborhood boutiques, small businesses help make Carlsbad more than just a place to live. They create jobs, bring people together and give the community its unique character.

November is National Entrepreneurship Month, and with San Diego Startup Week Nov. 2-6 and Small Business Saturday on Nov. 28, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the entrepreneurs and local businesses that make Carlsbad unique.

Shop Local in Carlsbad

In Carlsbad Village, local businesses offer more than products and services. They make shopping small part of the community’s identity.

Carlsbad Village Books

Carlsbad Village Books is a family-owned, community-backed independent bookstore in the heart of Carlsbad Village. With a wide selection of new and used books, a café, unique gifts and an art installation made from donated books, the shop is designed as a welcoming gathering space where readers can discover something new.

The Record Room

The Record Room brings music lovers together through a shared appreciation for vinyl and the nostalgia of physical music. Located in Carlsbad Village, the independent record store offers new and used records across genres, along with CDs, cassettes, music memorabilia and other collectibles.

Swirl Boutique

Swirl Boutique brings a curated mix of contemporary fashion to the heart of Carlsbad Village. Founded in Encinitas in 2006, the boutique has grown to include multiple Southern California locations, offering clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories from established and emerging designers.

A Community that Helps Businesses Grow

Behind every small business is an entrepreneur navigating the challenges of turning an idea into a sustainable operation. From understanding permitting requirements to finding the right location, access to reliable information and resources can make a meaningful difference.

The City of Carlsbad’s Business Support Office Hours with the City’s small business liaison provides one-on-one support for entrepreneurs interested in starting a business, as well as existing businesses looking to expand or relocate.

Celebrate Small Business Saturday

Small Business Saturday on Nov. 28 is a reminder that supporting local businesses can be part of everyday life. In Carlsbad Village, the Carlsbad Village Association is celebrating with a full day of activities designed to encourage residents and visitors to shop small. Festivities will include $2,000 in gift card giveaways, including CVA-sponsored restaurant gift cards and gift cards from participating retail businesses; a scavenger and treasure hunt; live holiday music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and 125 complimentary Shop Small Carlsbad Village tote bags sponsored by the City of Carlsbad.

“Small businesses are at the heart of what makes Carlsbad such a vibrant and welcoming community,” says Christine Davis, executive director of the Carlsbad Village Association. “Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to discover local favorites and see firsthand how shopping small helps our community thrive. We’re grateful that the City of Carlsbad is committed to providing resources and support that help small businesses succeed.”

Whether you’re picking up a book, searching for a new record or shopping for a gift, every local purchase is an opportunity to support the people and businesses that help shape the community.

This November, explore Carlsbad’s local businesses, discover a new favorite and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that keeps the city moving forward.
