Ride the barrels or stroll in the sand
From north to south, you’re sure to find the perfect beach that suits your mood. North Carlsbad Beaches are perfect for meetups with family and friends and close to dining, shopping and nightlife in our buzzing Carlsbad Village. Shred the waves or cruise on a longboard at iconic surf hotspots like Tamarack State Beach or the slightly more secluded Terramar Beach–just a hop, skip and jump from Carlsbad’s coolest offices at the Make Campus. South State Beach stretches for three miles, and goes from narrow at North Ponto Beach to the wide open South Ponto Beach–enormously popular with visitors and locals (and surfers) alike. South Carlsbad State Beach is a perfect escape away from the city life.
"Happy Trails" takes on a new meaning here
Carlsbad boasts over 40 parks and 60 plus miles of trails among 9,500 acres of open space. With about 263 sunshiny days every year, there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy them (even during May gray and June gloom). In fact, winter—at least, as we know it—is the prime time to get out there and explore. With average temperatures around 65 degrees, you couldn’t ask for better hiking weather. For a quiet, peaceful stroll among pristine wetland and estuary preserve, we recommend the stunning Batiquitos Lagoon Trail. Challenge yourself to summit a small volcano at Lake Calavera for some of the best views of North County. Or take a trip through time back to Old California on the Old Rancho Santa Fe Trail.
Pick a lagoon that fits your style
Carlsbad has three lagoons, each with their own distinct feel. Take in breathtaking views of the freshwater Buena Vista Lagoon from Hosp Trail—where you’ll feel more like you’re in the eucalyptus forests of Australia than in Southern California. Hop on a jetski, kayak, or a paddleboard and visit the Discovery Center at Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Bask in Mother Nature’s blessings at Batiquitos Lagoon where you can enjoy some of the most well-preserved trailhead in California.
Golf & Carlsbad: A Love Story
With so much exquisite golf in Carlsbad, it’s no wonder why the sport’s biggest names like TaylorMade, Callaway, COBRA Puma, Titleist and more have made their home in our town. Not to mention the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Park Sung-hyun regularly making the rounds around town. From beginner to pro, there’s a golf course to fit your skill level. Make a golf outing part of your staycation at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa or challenge yourself to hang with the pros at Aviara Golf Club, the home of the annual LPGA Kia Classic Tournament. Find the fairways (if you’re not distracted by the stunning views and open space) at The Crossings at Carlsbad or test your short irons and putting at par-3 course Rancho Carlsbad Golf Club. If you’re low on time or just want to get some swings in to prep yourself for golfing glory, head to the range at the Carlsbad Golf Center.
